Regular occupation period extender
The definition of total disability applies to the insured person's regular occupation during the first 24 months of the benefit period and to their replacement occupation after these first 24 months.
At the end of this 24-month period, the insured person must not only be unable to perform their usual occupation, but also be unable to perform a replacement occupation.*
The insured person can extend the definition of total disability based on the performance of their regular occupation beyond the 24-month period. They can continue receiving benefits for 5 years or to age 65.
The regular occupation period extender is offered for all occupation classes. However, insured persons in occupation Class B can only choose the 5-year extension option. The extension period of the regular occupation must be the same for all coverages selected.
Individuals working from home with restrictions are ineligible for this coverage.
*Replacement occupation: Any occupation that the insured person is reasonably qualified to do and which can provide them with at least 60% of the annual income they were earning immediately before the onset of disability. To determine what kind of replacement job they can hold, the company takes into account their education, training and experience, but not the availability of such an occupation in the region where they live.
